About the Poem
The poem The Tale of custard the Dragon is composed in the style of a Ballad (a song or poem that tells a story). In other words Ballad is a long song or poem which tells a story in simple language. Ballad narrates tales of courage or heroism. This poem is a humorous ballad close to parody.
This poem is about a little girl named Belinda who lived with her pets in her home named White House. The pets that lived with Belinda were: little kitten named Ink, a grey coloured mouse named Blink, a little yellow coloured dog named Mustard and a coward dragon named Custard.
All the pets of Belinda boasted about their bravery and courage and would always mock at Custard the dragon who was huge in size but a coward (timid) dragon as assumed by other pets. In other words, Belinda and all her pets except Custard were brave. All other pets used to sit on the red wagon and laugh at the timid dragon. All used to make fun of his cowardice.
It is known fact that “Tough time is the real test to find out one’s capability and strengths” and the time came to test the courage and bravery of pets that lived with Belinda. Suddenly, a pirate entered the house through the window. He had pistols in his both hands and was holding a sword in his teeth. Belinda turned pale due to fear and started crying for help.
All other pets fled from there and hid themselves. Then Custard, the dragon, who always kept crying for nice safe cage and was also mocked at for his cowardice by other pets, showed his bravery and came for help. He proved to be the real hero by facing the pirate boldly defeated him with his strength and gobbled him.
After when the Custard gobbled (swallowed) the pirate, every bit (completely) all the other pets who had run away from there in order to keep themselves safe from the pirate, came around the dragon. They started celebrating the victory. Belinda hugged the dragon. All of them were happy and they were showing their gratitude towards the dragon as he had saved them from the pirate.
After that, the other pets again started boasting of their bravery saying that they were twice or thrice (two or three times) braver than the dragon. But everybody knew the fact that who was brave and who was coward. The custard quite agreed that everybody was braver than him. (Here we come to know about the humbleness of the dragon that he did not brag about this feat of courage.)
